Dynamic Positioning (DP) — What It Means

Definition
• DP is a computer-assisted system that helps maintain vessel position and/or heading using thrusters and propulsion.
• It continuously compensates for wind, waves and current using sensors and position references.
• Think of DP as controlled thrust management — not “automatic shiphandling”.
What DP is NOT
• Not autopilot.
• Not a guarantee in all conditions.
• Not a replacement for seamanship and bridge decision-making.
Reminder: This is a learning aid. Follow your company procedures, DP class requirements and the vessel’s approved manuals.
